Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), once the most popular form of laser eye surgery, has been pushed into second place by LASIK. Both PRK and LASIK treat vision problems by reshaping the surface of the cornea and improving your ability to focus. The benefits of LASIK are significant in the short-term: vision is restored almost immediately and there is less discomfort after the procedure. If you dig a little deeper though, PRK still holds some competitive advantages.

  1. Time Tested. PRK has been utilized around the world since the early 1980s and was approved by the FDA in 1995. Eye surgeons have been successfully treating vision problems with PRK in the United States for over a decade.
  2. No Risk of Corneal Cutting Errors During Surgery. In PRK, no cuts are made to the cornea. During LASIK eye surgery, however, a circular slice of your cornea surface is made in order to expose the cornea for reshaping by the laser. A hinge is left at the edge of this surface cut, creating a flap that can be lifted up and then replaced once corneal reshaping has been completed. Miscalculation by your surgeon or mechanical complications during the procedure can result in errors that lead to vision problems. The flap may be cut too deep, resulting in an eye injury, or too shallow, creating a thin flap with a hole. Failure to leave a hinge can result in the loss of the corneal flap entirely.
  3. No Risk of Postoperative Corneal Flap Complications. Choosing PRK protects you from LASIK-specific complications like postoperative inflammation and infection of the flap. The flap can also come off or migrate and heal off center. Scar tissue may build up beneath the flap as well. Even with treatment, some of these complications can result in temporary or permanent vision loss.
  4. No Long-Term Activity Limitations. Returning to your previous activity level is easier with PRK. LASIK eye surgery results in long-term weakness at the incision line of the flap. If you engage in high-intensity physical activities like boxing, martial arts, racquetball or tennis, your are more vulnerable to eye trauma, which could dislodge the corneal flap. Similarly, working in an active profession, such as law enforcement or the military, puts you a higher risk for eye trauma that may result in flap-related postoperative complications.
  5. No Risk of LASIK-Induced Corneal Ectasia. The risk of corneal ectasia can be avoided if you have PRK instead of LASIK. Ectasia occurs when the cornea structure becomes weak and bulges, distorting your vision. LASIK surgery on patients with a thin cornea or the creation of a flap that is too thick can cause ectasia. This serious long-term complication may result in the need for contacts, glasses or, in some cases, a corneal transplant.

When I had problems with my vision I took a logical approach to fix it. I knew I had three options to cure my eyesight at my disposal – the natural method, glasses (or contact lenses) and LASIK surgery. With these three options, I considered the positives and negatives, which I list below: Laser Surgery Positives – Quick eye correction Negatives – possible blindness or blurriness, costs around $5000 dollars, regular inconvenient doctor visits post operation and risk of eye infections. Glasses / Contact Lenses Positives – Quick eye correction Negatives – Eyes weaken over time and worsen, costs average of $500/year for contact lenses / new glasses. Natural Method Positives – Free, permanent solution, no side effects, no risk to eyesight Negatives – It requires a bit of time And What Did I conclude? When I laid out the list like that, it was an absolute no brainer decision. I’ve got a solution staring at me in the face that I can start doing right now which has no side effects, no risk to my eyesight and the solution is permanent. I mean, seriously, why would you ever go with the other options without trying out the natural solution first? The Bates Solution So, I studied a publication that followed principles that Bates published so many decades ago.
